Raised Planter Bed with Trellis
This raised planter bed with trellis is a wooden garden box with a PE cover and a climbing frame, raising the bed to a workable height for vegetables and climbers. Growing at ground level means kneeling, weeds and whatever the local wildlife decides to sample. This raised planter brings the soil up to a workable height at 48.8 inches tall overall, with trellis supports built into the back for peas, beans, tomatoes and climbing flowers that would otherwise need staking separately.
The PE cover is what extends the season at both ends. It holds humidity and warmth around young plants in early spring, which brings a sowing forward by weeks, and shelters late crops from the first cold nights in autumn. Between those, it comes off entirely and the bed works as an ordinary open planter. Raised beds also warm up faster in spring than open ground, because the soil sits above the cold subsoil and is surrounded by air, which brings the first sowing forward on its own.
At 31.5 by 15.7 inches the bed is deep enough for real root growth but narrow enough to reach across from one side, which suits a balcony, a patio or a path edge. Drainage holes prevent water building up. It is lightweight and easy to move before filling — fill it in its final position.
